The primary mission of the Behavioral Support Program (BSP) at the Marie H. Katzenbach School for the Deaf is to provide education in a setting that addresses the social, cultural, behavioral, and psychological needs of Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing students with emotional disturbance. BSP is a highly structured educational program featuring a direct communication environment and a curriculum that meets the requirements of the Common Core Standards. Programming is available for students from elementary through high school including a residential component. Residential placement is strongly encouraged to provide the students with continuity in the implementation of their individual behavior plan, however, it is not required. The low student to adult ratio of the BSP staff allows individualized instruction that addresses the unique learning styles of the students. Individual and group counseling services are provided as well as psychiatric and medical consultation. Parent or guardian participation is required. The ultimate goal of the BSP Program is to return the students to regular programming in the Katzenbach School or to a placement determined at the Individualized Education Program (IEP) meeting. The BSP Program follows Katzenbach School’s 10-month school calendar. Tuition cost to school districts varies and is determined by day or residential programming, with an additional charge for students enrolled by school districts outside the State of New Jersey.
