HOME

Campus life in the High School continues the philosophy that high school is a time for learning through experience. Co-curricular and extracurricular activities, field trips,  Interscholastic and intramural sports, parties, and clubs fill the students' afternoon and evening hours. Intramural sports conducted through local recreation leagues include basketball, soccer, and coed softball. We swim at College of New Jersey on a weekly basis.

Students participate in a mandatory study hour every day.  MKSD's Educational Resource Center (ERC) is open every afternoon and evening and provides tutoring and help with homework.  The ERC is equipped with a state-of-the-art computer lab. A Certified Teacher of the Deaf coordinates the ERC program.  The residential staff closely coordinates long term projects, homework, and study time with the academic staff.

Students enjoy trips into the surrounding community for bowling, shopping and entertainment. On-campus activities include: games, captioned television, movies, and quiet activities such as art and crafts projects, board games and story telling. Students travel to a local theater to enjoy the open-captioned movies.  In addition, students form clubs to pursue a variety of interests.

Clubs are an important part of the program as they are developed according to the interests of the students. Recently Katzenbach was awarded a grant from the Citigroup Foundation to fund the startup costs of the Bike Club.  Students enjoy leisurely  bike hikes while at the same time learning the rules of the road and bike safety.

Students practice the latest in hair styles and nail decoration in the Hair and Nails Club. The Cooking Club bakes goodies and the Video Club learns about equipment care and operation and plans to produce videos of campus activities.  The School News Club keeps the staff and students informed about campus activities.  This past year the students expressed an interest in an arts program,  furniture refinishing, pets, and karate.  These or other clubs will be formed in September when the students return to school..

An important component of the High School Residential Program is the Level Program. The Level Program focuses on academic skills, living skills, social skills, and personal responsibility.  This is a reward-driven program where students earn privileges based on performance.  Students advance in the program based on quarterly performance evaluations.  The students have weekly meetings to discuss solutions to issues, review weekly agendas, or offer suggestions for the residential program.

Paid work experience is available through various jobs offered by the residential program.  Students have the opportunity to assist in the cafeteria during meals, manage the Colt's Center (MKSD's student activity center), maintain records for the Bike Club and perform light maintenance on the bikes, and perform various handyman jobs on campus.

Participation in the annual Mr./Miss MKSD Pageant provides students experience in developing poise in interviews, performing their talents, and presenting themselves in formal wear.  The male and female winners then represent MKSD in the Deaf  Teen America Pageant that is hosted in various cities in the United States. The semi-formal Junior/Senior Prom is held in the spring and provides another opportunity to advance social skills.  The theme and location changes yearly.

Day students can participate in the MKSD Residential Program  recreational activities by the provision of a late bus, or residential placement for the length of the activity.  Providing students the opportunity to participate in recreational activities is the responsibility of the sending school district and should be a part of the development of the IEP. The residential program is in operation Monday through Thursday, and bus transportation is arranged by the sending school district on Monday morning and on Friday afternoon.
