The MKSD Special Needs Residential Program is designed to facilitate the development of independent living and life skills for our students who require both a highly structured program, and a nurturing environment. The low student to adult ratio permits the staff to work individually with the students to assist them in acquiring the skills necessary to become self-reliant adults. Life skills training is an integral piece of the program. Students learn to cook, do their own laundry, and manage their personal hygiene. Residential staff provides reinforcement of the students' academic program with tutoring during the study hour. Students participate in social activities such as field trips, parties, and intramural sports with all of the other residential students. They also attend movie nights at the Colt Center, MKSD's student activity center, and belong to the Bike Club. Arts and crafts, games, and storytelling are a few of the quiet activities the student's enjoy in the evening hours.
Parents and Guardians receive weekly news of their child's accomplishments through the use of a communication book. It is important that families and staff share information about successes in the students' life skills development so the same skills can be practiced at home and in the dorm. Residential staff works closely with the administrators and staff of the Lower and Middle Schools, and the high school's Developmental Education Program to provide a continuum of programming for each student throughout the afternoon and evening hours. The residential program is in operation Monday through Thursday, and bus transportation is scheduled by the sending school districts on Monday morning and on Friday afternoon.
